 admission decision

  • Basically, each college has a unique decision process but all of them follow general guidelines.
  • They usually have a team of three directors who usually agree that if two of the members of the admissions team are in agreement, then it is a majority vote.
  • They look at grades, all test scores, extracurricular activities, admission essays, and applications. Essay is hugely important because it is the only way that the directors catch a glimpse of who you are. They love personal stories that are positive and reflect who you are.
  • Don’t underestimate the importance of your TOEFL scores. Many schools use this guide heavily and sometimes they will even use your TOEFL reading score if your SAT reading score is not high enough.
  • Money is HUGE. Most colleges will be flexible with the whole packet if the student does not need financial aid. Never forget that universities and colleges in the U.S. is a multi-billion dollar business.
  • Directors look to see if your entire admission packet is complete. If you have anything missing, they will sometimes inform you but in many instances, you will simply receive a rejection letter. It is your responsibility to find out if they received everything.
  • Always send documents courier as you get a tracking number to follow the delivery.
  • Always put your ethnic identity front and center on your application. Colleges LOVE international students especially those who do not need financial need.
  • Always send an email to the directors and let them know who you are. Perhaps give them a call. But, always get your mails spell checked.
